I am a law professor at GW and have been since 1994. I mainly write in the area of law and religion (See Secular Government, Religious People - Eerdmans, 2014). In addition to law school, I have a master's degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and a PhD in religious ethics from the University of Virginia. I am an active member of an ELCA congregation, and provide legal advice to both the local synod and the national body of the ELCA (along with other denominations). My future research agenda includes a return to theological ethics, especially focused on the relationship between citizen, church & state through the lens of
